“Why Do I need a Wind Mitigation?”

A Wind Mitigation inspection is required if you intend to get hurricane insurance on your home. If you are paying cash for your home, the decision to obtain hurricane insurance is a voluntary one, based on the personal feelings of the buyer. If the house is being financed, the mortgage company will require that you have regular insurance and hurricane insurance. You will need a Wind Mitigation Inspection in order to obtain hurricane insurance. The fact that the previous owner had a Wind Mitigation Inspection done will not be acceptable for you to obtain insurance. You should check with your insurance agent to see exactly what type of inspection you may need.

By the Way….What is a Wind Mitigation?

A Wind Mitigation Inspection evaluates seven criteria of you home to determine how well it will withstand a hurricane. Based on the results of that inspection, your insurance carrier is required to provide you with certain discounts on your hurricane insurance premium. Since 2001 the Florida Building Code has established new home construction standards to protect your home from wind damage, and damage from flying objects. You receive insurance premium discounts based on your homes compliance with these building code requirements. Older homes generally do not meet as many of the standards as newer homes. However, many of them were built to the newer building code standards, even though they were constructed years before the 2001 FBC was adopted.
